Phantom, inspired by Rabanne Phantom (2021)

Phantom puts lavender at the centre and keeps it there from first spray to drydown. Lemon zest makes the start sparkle, and the lavender has a rounded, almost creamy feel rather than a medicinal one. In the middle, apple adds fruit while smoke and earthy patchouli roughen the surface a little. The finish settles on vanilla and vetiver, sweet but kept dry by the grassy root.

About the original

Rabanne pre-launched Phantom in global travel retail in July 2021, with wider markets following that August. The bottle is shaped like a robot, and some sizes carry an NFC chip linking to digital content, a first for the brand; a 200 ml refill is also sold. Rabanne sums the scent up as creamy lavender, energising lemon and addictive vanilla. Phantom Parfum, Intense, Elixir and Phantom in Red came later and are different fragrances.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Rabanne (formerly Paco Rabanne) stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Lavender fans who find classic fougères too stern tend to like how Phantom tempers the herb with vanilla. It reads as playful and fresh at first, but the base is sweet, so a buyer after a purely citrus or aquatic scent may find the drydown too sugary.

Lemon zest and Amalfi lemon arrive with the lavender, bright and slightly bitter at the edges.

The heart brings in apple alongside a thread of smoke and earthy notes, with patchouli giving it a darker floor. Lavender stays audible throughout.

Vanilla takes over in the base, while vetiver draws a dry, grassy line through it and more lavender keeps the profile aromatic.

Is this the original Phantom or one of the flankers?

This page is based on the original Phantom Eau de Toilette from 2021. Phantom Parfum, Intense, Elixir and Phantom in Red are separate fragrances.

Is Phantom sweet?

Moderately. The opening is lavender and lemon, but vanilla leads the base, so the drydown is noticeably sweeter than the start.

Does Phantom smell smoky?

There is a smoke note in the heart alongside earthy patchouli, but it sits under the lavender rather than taking over.
