Gentleman, inspired by Givenchy Gentleman Givenchy Eau de Parfum (2018)

Black pepper and lavender open Gentleman with a dry, aromatic snap. Within minutes orris takes over; orris comes from the root of the iris and smells powdery, buttery and faintly like cosmetics. Peru balsam lays a resinous warmth beneath it, and black vanilla with patchouli gives the base a dark, rounded sweetness. Once settled it changes little, holding that iris and vanilla accord.

About the original

Givenchy's first Gentleman dates from 1974 and is still sold as Gentleman Original. In 2017 the house released a new Gentleman Givenchy eau de toilette by Olivier Cresp and Nathalie Lorson, presented as a modern reading of the 1974 scent. The eau de parfum arrived in 2018 with more pepper and iris and less sweet fruit than the 2017 version, which no longer appears in Givenchy's US or international men's range. Réserve Privée, Boisée and the Gentleman Society line came later.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Givenchy stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Evenings, dinners and cooler weather are where it sits most comfortably. Iris and vanilla make it powdery and sweet, which some wearers find overly sweet; men after something crisp and citrusy would be better served by another bottle.

Which Givenchy Gentleman is this based on?

It is inspired by the 2018 Gentleman Givenchy eau de parfum, the current core version. It is not the 1974 Gentleman (now Gentleman Original), Gentleman Society or Réserve Privée.

Is it powdery?

Yes. Orris is the central note, and together with vanilla it gives a soft, powdery sweetness through the whole drydown.

How does it differ from the 2017 Gentleman eau de toilette?

The eau de parfum opens with more pepper, puts more weight on iris and has less sweet fruit than the 2017 eau de toilette, which featured pear and is no longer listed by Givenchy.
