Grey Vetiver, inspired by Tom Ford Grey Vetiver (2009)

Vetiver, the grassy, rooty grass used across classic men's perfumery, is the backbone here. Grapefruit and orange flower brighten it at the top, giving a bitter-citrus and lightly floral start. Nutmeg and pimento, the allspice berry, add a dry spice that stops it feeling purely fresh. Oakmoss closes it with a slightly damp, forest-floor depth, and the whole composition stays neat and restrained.

About the original

Grey Vetiver went on sale in September 2009 at Nordstrom as Tom Ford's new men's fragrance, released as an eau de parfum. Reader comments at the time, never confirmed, suggested it had first been planned for the Private Blend line, but it launched in the Signature collection, where it still sits. The brand describes it as refined and debonair. Tom Ford also sells a Grey Vetiver Parfum and a lighter Eau de Grey Vetiver eau de toilette.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Tom Ford stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

A man who already likes vetiver and wants it presented cleanly, with citrus and moss rather than smoke or sugar, will find familiar ground here. The rooty, bitter character can come across as austere to someone used to sweet or ambery fragrances.

Grapefruit gives the top a bitter, zesty edge, with orange flower adding a pale floral lift.

Nutmeg and pimento come through in the middle, peppery and clove-like, sitting close to the vetiver.

The drydown is vetiver and oakmoss: dry, rooty and faintly mossy, with nothing sugary softening it.
