Vetiver & Golden Vanilla, inspired by Jo Malone London Vetiver & Golden Vanilla Cologne Intense (2020)

Cardamom and a grapefruit-tea accord give a brisk, aromatic start with a green accent. Vetiver then takes over: earthy, rooty and faintly smoky, the grass root perfumers use for dry woody depth. Bourbon vanilla rounds it out without burying the vetiver, and a touch of lavender sits in the background.

About the original

Jo Malone London announced it in November 2019 as the newest Cologne Intense, on sale from January 2020; the press release called it Vetiver & Vanilla, but it sells as Vetiver & Golden Vanilla. Mathilde Bijaoui is credited as the perfumer, and launch coverage tied the pairing to Madagascar's vanilla and vetiver. It belongs to the permanent Cologne Intense range in 50 ml and 100 ml. It is a different scent from the brand's 1995 Vetyver cologne.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jo Malone London stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Fans of vetiver who usually find it too stern on its own will appreciate the vanilla cushioning here. The earthy, smoky side stays clear throughout, so this is no dessert-style vanilla.

No. Vetyver is a 1995 cologne with orange, nutmeg and tarragon; Vetiver & Golden Vanilla is a 2020 Cologne Intense. We make versions of both.

How sweet is the vanilla?

Moderately. Bourbon vanilla sits in the base beneath vetiver, so the scent stays earthy and smoky rather than gourmand.

No. It belongs to Jo Malone London's permanent Cologne Intense range.
