Bergamask, inspired by Orto Parisi Bergamask (2014)

Bergamot here is thick and resinous, nearer to the oil pressed from the peel than to a splash of juice, and lemon and lime give it a sugared, almost confit edge. Spice and lavender then move in, so the citrus takes on an aromatic, slightly herbal shading. Orange blossom, lilac and lily-of-the-valley also appear in the circulating note lists. Cedarwood, sandalwood, tonka and two kinds of musk carry the finish, which turns musky and a little feral.

About the original

Alessandro Gualtieri, who founded Nasomatto before starting Orto Parisi, created Bergamask, and the brand dates its release to 2014. Orto Parisi sells it as a perfume extract and gives it a cap of antique-gold metal with an inlaid piece of horn. The house does not publish notes, so every list in circulation, including the one used here, is unofficial. No flankers of Bergamask have been found.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Orto Parisi stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Citrus lovers who want bergamot with more weight than a classic cologne are the natural audience. The brand stresses that it unfolds slowly, so it rewards patience. Its musky, slightly animalic base is the part that can surprise anyone expecting something clean and soapy.

Bergamot dominates the start, oily and green-gold, with lemon peel sweetened as if candied and a flick of lime.

Lavender and unspecified spices give the middle an aromatic bite, while orange blossom, lilac and lily-of-the-valley sit quietly behind them.

The base settles on cedarwood and sandalwood, rounded by tonka bean and held together by musk and white musk with a faintly animal edge.

Does Bergamask smell like a classic cologne?

Not really. The bergamot is denser and sweeter than in a traditional cologne, and the finish is musky and woody rather than crisp.

Is Bergamask related to Nasomatto?

Both houses were founded by Alessandro Gualtieri, who created Bergamask for Orto Parisi. It is not part of the Nasomatto range.
