Escapade Gourmande, inspired by Maison Mataha Escapade Gourmande (2021)

Black sugar comes first, cooked until it smells almost burnt, like the cracked top of a crème brûlée. Vanilla absolute and tonka bean absolute sit beneath it, and the tonka adds an almond-and-hay depth. With only a handful of notes, the scent stays focused on that one dessert image. Musk smooths the base.

About the original

Escapade Gourmande is the debut fragrance of Maison Mataha, a niche house founded in 2020, and the centrepiece of its Collection Mémoire Gourmande. Vincent Ricord composed it, and retailers date its release to 2021. The original is an extrait de parfum; a stronger flanker, Escapade Gourmande Grand Cru, was added later as an absolu de parfum, and we take the standard version as our reference.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Maison Mataha stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Very sweet by any standard, it rewards people who already love dense vanilla gourmands. The house pairs it with autumn and winter. Caramelised sugar is the main event, so anyone wary of sugary scents is better served by something lighter.

The opening is black sugar, dark and caramelised, with a slightly bitter burnt edge.

Vanilla absolute and tonka then deepen it into a rich, custard-like heart.

Musk carries the drydown, keeping the vanilla smooth and rounded.

Is this the original Escapade Gourmande or the Grand Cru?

It is modelled on the standard Escapade Gourmande, an extrait from 2021. Grand Cru is a later, stronger absolu de parfum flanker. This page follows that standard edition, not the Grand Cru.
