Kalan, inspired by Parfums de Marly Kalan (2019)

Kalan starts with the bitter-sweet tang of blood orange cut through by cracked black pepper. Lavender arrives next, joined by wormwood, a silvery herb with a dry, slightly medicinal bitterness, while orange blossom keeps the middle from turning austere. Underneath, tonka bean gives an almond-and-hay roundness that sits against cedarwood and a shaded, earthy moss. The house groups it as woody, spicy and gourmand, and the sweetness stays measured rather than dessert-like.

About the original

Kalan was released in 2019, and Parfums de Marly sells it in its men's collection as a masculine fragrance. Its creation is usually credited to Céline Ripert, though the brand's own page does not name a perfumer. The current official pyramid lists cedarwood in the base, whereas older database listings mention sandalwood and amber. Some wearers claim a reformulation, which the brand has not confirmed.

Who it suits

Kalan suits men who like lavender with more body than a clean, classic fougère, as the pepper and tonka thicken it. The bitterness of wormwood and the earthy moss are noticeable, so a straightforwardly sweet or fresh scent this is not.
