Meander, inspired by Amouage Meander (2020)

Meander smells of incense drifting through wet greenery. Olibanum (frankincense) opens it with black and pink pepper, while carrot adds an earthy, slightly rooty sweetness. Orris and rose give the heart a cool, powdery floral tone, and jonquil, a type of narcissus with a green, hay-like smell, keeps it outdoorsy. It dries down to resinous frankincense, vetiver and sandalwood, where the dampness gives way to something drier and dustier.

About the original

Mackenzie Reilly of IFF created Meander for Amouage's Renaissance Collection in 2020. The brand ties it to the landscape around Salalah in southern Oman, which turns green in the monsoon season, and the perfumer describes it as lush green notes set against warm, dry desert dust. It is an eau de parfum and remains in Amouage's range. Amouage gives it no gender on its own page, though some retailers file it under men's.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Amouage stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

It rewards a wearer who enjoys contemplative, earthy scents, built on incense, roots and vetiver more than fruit or sugar. The carrot and orris accord may come across as odd or dusty to someone expecting a conventional floral or a sweet amber.

Olibanum oil, carrot heart, pink pepper and black pepper open it, resinous and spicy with an earthy undertone.

The heart joins orris and rose absolute with cypriol and jonquil absolute, a floral middle with a woody, slightly smoky thread running through it.

Olibanum returns in the base, this time as a resinoid, with vetiver and sandalwood for a dry finish of incense and wood.

Is Amouage Meander for men or women?

Amouage does not give it a gender on its product page. Some retailers list it as men's, and we treat it as unisex.

What does carrot smell like in a perfume?

Carrot materials smell earthy and faintly sweet, a little like orris root. In Meander they sit with frankincense and pepper in the opening.
