Symphonium, inspired by Xerjoff Symphonium (2020)

Symphonium opens on orange and Spanish mandarin, which read like candied peel once the chocolate arrives. Belgian chocolate is the centre of the scent, dark rather than milky, and Indian cardamom gives it a cool, aromatic lift. Underneath, oud supplies a resinous, slightly animalic woodiness (oud is the dark, resin-soaked heartwood of the agar tree). The chocolate softens that animalic edge, and the drydown settles on Madagascar vanilla and musk.

About the original

Retailer listings date Symphonium to around 2020 and usually credit Chris Maurice, though Xerjoff confirms neither. It belongs to the 17/17 Stone Label line, and its bottle is set with a black-and-white Dalmatian jasper stone. Xerjoff classifies it as a woody gourmand. Other Stone Label scents, such as Homme, Elle and Irisss, are separate fragrances.

Who it suits

The oud is the deciding factor. People who enjoy chocolate notes but have never liked oud should test the original before buying, because it is part of the base rather than a passing accent. Citrus at the top and vanilla at the end keep it rich without a heavy load of sugar.
