The Tragedy Of Lord George, inspired by Penhaligon's The Tragedy of Lord George (2016)

Lord George opens with a slug of spirits that quickly loses its alcoholic bite. What remains is a fougère, the fern-like accord behind many traditional men's fragrances, here given a lather of shaving soap. Tonka bean softens it with a hay-and-almond sweetness. Ambrox, a dry material with an ambergris character, carries the base.

About the original

Alberto Morillas is credited with The Tragedy of Lord George, released in 2016 in the first chapter of Penhaligon's Portraits. The brand describes a fougère with a masculine fruitiness and a touch of shaving soap, warmed by rum. Within the Portraits story Lord George is the brother of Arthur, who received his own scent in 2021. An Intense eau de parfum was added later under the same name, but our version follows the 2016 original.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Penhaligon's stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

The rum-and-soap contrast is what draws people to it. One early review placed it in autumn, and it reads cosy rather than formal, though the tonka sweetness may be too much for a buyer wanting a crisp, purely fresh fougère.

The original 2016 eau de parfum. The Tragedy of Lord George Intense came later and is a different fragrance.

Does it smell boozy?

In the opening, yes, as rum and brandy lead. They give way fairly quickly to soap, tonka and amber.

How does it compare with The World According to Arthur?

The two are brothers in the Portraits story but differ in style. Lord George is a soapy, boozy fougère, whereas Arthur centres on incense, sage and ambrette.
