Tony Iommi Monkey Special, inspired by Xerjoff Tony Iommi Monkey Special (2021)

Monkey Special starts with a splash of rum, sharpened by bergamot and passion fruit, with geranium giving a rosy, faintly minty green edge. The boozy note carries into a heart of leather and cinnamon, where Singaporean patchouli adds earthiness. Then the sweetness builds. Caramel and vanilla dominate the base, held in shape by sandalwood and labdanum, a resin with a dark, ambery, slightly leathery smell.

About the original

Monkey Special is the first scent from Xerjoff's collaboration with Tony Iommi, the Black Sabbath guitarist, developed with the house's founder Sergio Momo. Xerjoff's own blog names Iommi as the first Blends collaborator in 2021, though the brand gives no exact launch date or perfumer. A second Iommi scent, Tony Iommi Deified, followed and centres on leather and spice. The brand files Monkey Special as a woody oriental.

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Xerjoff stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Sweetness is the first thing to weigh up. Caramel, rum and vanilla make this a distinctly sugary leather, so people who prefer dry, smoky leather may find it too rich. Fans of boozy gourmand orientals get a leather note that gives the sweetness some backbone.
