Sailing Day is a sea scent rather than a beach-holiday one, and none of its listed notes is coconut or sun cream. The aquatic accord arrives with aldehydes, synthetic materials that give a clean, fizzy lift a little like freshly laundered linen, while juniper adds a resinous, gin-like edge. Coriander and iris keep the middle dry and slightly powdery, with rose sitting quietly underneath. As it settles, red seaweed and an ambergris accord bring a mineral, salted-skin finish.

About the original

Maison Margiela's Replica line recreates specific memories, and Sailing Day takes the sea as its subject. It was released as an eau de toilette, usually dated to 2017, in 30 and 100 ml bottles. Retail descriptions present it as a sea breeze on a summer day. It shares the collection with Under the Lemon Trees, which takes a citrus and green-tea route instead of a marine one.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Maison Margiela stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Its natural setting, going by retail descriptions, is summer daytime. Salt and seaweed are the whole point, so a buyer hoping for a sweet or musky fresh scent may find it austere, and the aldehydic start can read as soapy for the first few minutes.

At first it is cool and effervescent: aquatic notes with aldehydes and the green-resin snap of juniper.

The middle turns drier. Coriander gives a faintly spicy, seed-like note and iris a powdery coolness, with rose in a supporting role rather than as a bouquet.

The base is where the sea comes through most clearly, with red seaweed, a salty ambergris accord and a pale ambery wood.
