Wood Sage & Sea Salt, inspired by Jo Malone London Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne (2014)

Rather than a classic marine scent, this one leans dry and mineral. Ambrette seed, a plant-based musk note with a gently fruity, skin-like quality, sets the tone at the top. Sea salt sits in the heart and gives the scent a crunchy, sea-spray texture, while sage brings an earthy, aromatic woodiness to the base. The result is airy and pale, evoking the coast, which is how Jo Malone frames it.

About the original

Christine Nagel created Wood Sage & Sea Salt for Jo Malone London in 2014, describing sea air mixed with the salty, mineral texture of sand and stones and the scent of driftwood. It launched as a cologne inspired by the British coast and is still sold today. The official sites list it only in standard cologne strength, with no Cologne Intense version. At launch the brand suggested layering it with Lime Basil & Mandarin or Nectarine Blossom & Honey.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jo Malone London stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Texture is the selling point: sheer and salty, without sweetness. Anyone hoping for a deep, resinous woody scent may find it too sheer in character; the original was conceived as a light cologne.

Ambrette seed opens it with a musky, faintly fruity tone, and the launch notes add grapefruit for a brief citrus lift.

Sea salt then takes the centre, dry and mineral; the launch notes also mention red algae, which gives a marine edge.

Sage carries the drydown, herbal and woody, so the finish stays clean and earthy rather than sweet.

Is there a Wood Sage & Sea Salt Cologne Intense?

Not on the official sites we checked. Jo Malone sells it as a standard Cologne, which is the original our eau de parfum is inspired by.

Does Wood Sage & Sea Salt smell like the sea?

More like the shore. Salt, mineral notes and dry herbs replace the watery, ozonic style of many marine fragrances.
