Sun, inspired by Jil Sander Sun (1989)

Sun belongs to the warm floral-oriental style of the late 1980s. Bergamot and orange blossom give a brief citrus lift, with blackcurrant leaves adding a green, slightly tart edge. The heart turns powdery: heliotrope, with its almond-and-cherry-pie facet, sits with orris root and the clove-like spice of carnation. From there it settles into a resinous base of benzoin, styrax, vanilla and tonka bean, ambery and enveloping.

About the original

Jil Sander released Sun for women in 1989, and the name has since been used for many flankers including Sun Men and summer editions. Jil Sander fragrances are licensed to Coty.

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jil Sander stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Fans of retro florientals will recognise the style at once. Its powder and vanilla are prominent, so it can feel old-fashioned to anyone used to fresh, transparent modern florals. Comfort is the main appeal: rounded, resinous and calm.

The opening mixes bergamot, rosewood and orange blossom with fruity notes and the green tang of blackcurrant leaves.

The drydown is resin and sweetness: benzoin, styrax, amber, vanilla and tonka bean over patchouli, sandalwood and musk.

Yes. Heliotrope, orris and carnation give the heart a clear powdery texture, which continues into the vanilla and benzoin base.
