Acqua Di Gio pour Femme, inspired by Giorgio Armani Acqua di Giò for women (1995)

Lemon and a little fruit, peach and pineapple, make the first minutes lively without syrup. A green note of banana leaf and violet keeps it crisp. The flowers then gather: lily-of-the-valley, hyacinth and jasmine, carried on calone, a synthetic molecule that smells of sea spray with a melon-like edge. The base stays sheer, light musk with cedar and sandalwood.

About the original

Armani launched the women's Acqua di Giò in 1995, a year before the far better known men's version, and took the island of Pantelleria as its inspiration. Edouard Fléchier is credited as the perfumer. It remains in Armani Beauty's women's range in France and Italy, though it is not offered in the US. Armani's current description cites bergamot and green mandarin in the opening, which differs from the note list given in fragrance databases.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Giorgio Armani stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

It stays airy rather than heady. It is a daytime scent, at its best in spring and summer heat. Its watery calone accord feels distinctly 1990s, which some will enjoy and others will find dated.

Is Acqua di Giò for women discontinued?

No. Armani Beauty still sells it in France and Italy, although it is not available in the US range.

Is this the women's or the men's Acqua di Giò?

The women's, from 1995. The men's Acqua di Giò (1996) is a separate scent.

Is it the same as Acqua di Gioia?

No. Acqua di Gioia is a different women's fragrance from 2010; this is the original 1995 Acqua di Giò for women.
