Aoud Velvet

Aoud Velvet, inspired by Montale Aoud Velvet (2006)

Accounts of Aoud Velvet differ, but most published note lists make it a white floral first and an oud second. Tiaré, the Tahitian gardenia, leads with ylang-ylang, and orange blossom adds a lighter, honeyed note. One description mentions a short bitter, camphor-like moment before those flowers open up. Beneath them, oud and sandalwood give a soft woody frame, while vanilla and tonka bean (a sweet seed with an almond-like scent) make the finish plush and musky, which suits the name.

About the original

Aoud Velvet is a long-standing scent from Montale's oud line, and fragrance references date it to 2006. They class it as a floral woody musk, and most published note lists agree on its white flowers, vanilla and tonka, although one source gives a spicier pyramid. Montale no longer lists it, and its former product page on the brand's site now says it is no longer available, though a few discounters still list it. It is a different fragrance from Montale's current Velvet Fantasy.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Montale stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Anyone who finds most ouds too smoky or medicinal is the likeliest fan, since the wood here stays behind the flowers. One review site suggests cooler seasons for it. Tiaré and ylang-ylang are heady, creamy flowers, so a buyer hoping for a dry or austere oud may find it too lush.

No. Velvet Fantasy is a separate, current Montale fragrance.

Why do note lists for Aoud Velvet differ?

Montale no longer publishes one, and sources disagree. Most describe white flowers over oud, sandalwood, vanilla and tonka, while one gives a spicier pyramid with saffron and leather. This page follows the white-floral version.
