Aoud Orange, inspired by Montale Orange Aoud (2014)

Orange Aoud opens with bergamot and lemon, but the citrus fades quickly behind oud, clove and pink pepper, so the impression is spiced wood rather than fruit. Violet and rose lend the heart a powdery floral tone, with ylang-ylang adding a heavy, slightly fruity sweetness and patchouli leaves keeping it earthy. Leather and oakmoss, a mossy note with a damp forest-floor smell, shape the base alongside sandalwood and white musk.

About the original

Montale's official name for this scent is Orange Aoud; it is sometimes listed as Aoud Orange, which is the same fragrance. fragrance references date it to around 2014, and Montale placed it in its Oriental family. It is no longer listed in Montale's catalogue, and its former product page on the brand's site now says it is no longer available. One review site calls it floral, leathery and powdery, a style likely to divide opinion.

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Montale stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Floral-leather ouds are an acquired taste, and this one leans on violet and leather more than on the orange its name suggests. Fans of powdery, slightly old-school leather may find it exactly right, though a citrus oud it is not.

Montale no longer lists it in its catalogue, and the brand's own product page now says it is no longer available. We have found no official statement from Montale.

Is Aoud Orange the same as Orange Aoud?

Yes. Orange Aoud is Montale's official name; Aoud Orange simply reverses the words.

Does it smell of orange?

Only faintly. Bergamot and lemon open it, but spice, violet and leather soon take over.

Is Montale Aoud Orange coming back?
