Bang

Bang, inspired by Marc Jacobs Bang (2010)

Bang is built almost entirely on pepper. Pink pepper gives a rosy, fizzy sting, and pepperwood adds a woodier, aromatic prickle. The middle is plain dry wood, with nothing floral to cushion it. As it settles, vetiver and oakmoss give an earthy, forest-floor depth, while elemi and benzoin add a resinous glow without turning it sweet.

About the original

Ann Gottlieb and Yann Vasnier created Bang for Marc Jacobs in 2010 as a men's fragrance. It is still described as a 'pepper bomb', which sums up how single-minded it is. Bang Bang, a lighter flanker from 2011, is a separate scent from this original. Bang no longer appears on Marc Jacobs' fragrance pages, and perfume databases report it as discontinued, although the brand has never announced it.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Marc Jacobs stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Men who find most designer scents too sweet are the likeliest fans. It is dry, earthy and assertive, closer to a spice cupboard and damp woods than to anything fresh. The pepper is blunt from the first spray, and the oakmoss base keeps it dry to the end.

The opening is pepper on pepper: pink pepper and pepperwood, prickly and aromatic.

Dry woody notes take over in the heart, keeping the scent lean and austere.

The base brings vetiver, oakmoss and patchouli for an earthy floor, with elemi, a lemony resin, and benzoin adding a balsamic roundness.

Is this Bang or Bang Bang?

This is the original Bang from 2010. Bang Bang (2011) is a lighter flanker and a different scent.

Is Marc Jacobs Bang discontinued?

It no longer appears on Marc Jacobs' fragrance pages and is widely reported as discontinued. Coty has never made a public announcement about it.

Is it sweet at all?

Hardly. Benzoin gives the base a slight balsamic softness, but the overall character is dry pepper and earthy woods.

Is Marc Jacobs Bang coming back?
