The New Rose, inspired by Montale The New Rose (2016)

Rose sits at the centre, but it arrives dressed in fruit. Lemon gives the first spray a lift, while raspberry and blackcurrant add a tart, jammy edge and peach rounds those berries out. As it develops, the flower stays fresh and dewy, helped along by lily of the valley and a touch of ylang-ylang. Underneath, vanilla and sandalwood bring a gentle sweetness that does not turn heavy.

About the original

Montale released The New Rose as a unisex 100 ml eau de parfum, which fragrance references date to 2016. Retailers filed it among the brand's floral scents. It is a separate perfume from Montale's other roses, such as Roses Musk, Rose Elixir, Candy Rose and Aoud Queen Roses. The New Rose is no longer listed in Montale's current catalogue, and its old product pages on the official site now say it is no longer available, although the brand has published no statement about it.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Montale stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Wearers who like their rose cheerful and fruit-forward will get on with it best, and it is sold as unisex. The berry and vanilla sweetness is noticeable, so a dry, green or austere rose this is not.

Lemon opens with a quick citrus flash, followed at once by raspberry, blackcurrant and peach gathered around a Bulgarian rose.

The heart keeps the rose in front, now more floral, with lily of the valley adding a clean green note and ylang-ylang a slightly exotic one.

Sandalwood and vanilla make up the base, giving a smooth, faintly sweet finish. One retailer also lists white musk.

Is Montale The New Rose discontinued?

It no longer appears in Montale's official catalogue, and the brand's old product pages now say it is no longer available. Montale has not made an announcement, and some retailers may still have remaining bottles.

Is The New Rose a sweet rose?

Moderately. The red fruits and vanilla make it sweeter than a classic green or powdery rose, while lemon and lily of the valley keep it fresh.

Is Montale The New Rose coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Montale that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
