Velvet Bergamot

Velvet Bergamot, inspired by Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Bergamot (2014)

Bergamot leads with a bitter twist, an accord modelled on amaro, the Italian herbal liqueur. Clary sage adds a dry, faintly musky herbal tone, and cassis bud brings a green, tart edge. Orange blossom and petitgrain (the oil distilled from the leaves and twigs of the bitter orange tree) keep the middle clean rather than sweet. The bergamot comes across rounder than in a typical cologne, and the scent changes little on its way to the base.

About the original

Velvet Bergamot arrived in May 2014 alongside Velvet Rose, extending Dolce & Gabbana's Velvet Collection of eaux de parfum. At launch it was sold exclusively at Harrods, and the brand framed it as a bittersweet Sicilian orchard. Velvet Infusion, still on sale, is a different Velvet scent with bergamot, mandarin and black tea. Velvet Bergamot is no longer listed on the brand's own Velvet Collection pages, although some retailers still carry bottles.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Dolce & Gabbana stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Its natural setting is a spring or summer working day, worn by a man who wants something tidy and discreet. The amaro bitterness at the start is brief, but anyone expecting a rich, ambery scent may find it plain.

Top notes: Amaro Accord, Bergamot, Clary Sage

Heart notes: Cassis Bud, Orange Blossom, Petitgrain

Base notes: Vetiver, Ambrette

Bergamot opens with the amaro accord, which gives it a herbal bitterness, and clary sage runs underneath.

Cassis bud, orange blossom and petitgrain form the heart: green, faintly floral and very clean.

The drydown is vetiver with ambrette, a seed note with a musky, slightly pear-like smoothness.

Is Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Bergamot discontinued?

It no longer appears on the brand's official Velvet Collection pages, and we have found no official statement. Some retailers still sell remaining stock.

Is this the same as Velvet Infusion?

No. Velvet Infusion is a different Velvet Collection scent with mandarin and black tea alongside bergamot. Ours is based on Velvet Bergamot from 2014.

What is the amaro accord?

It recreates the bittersweet, herbal character of Italian amaro liqueurs. Here it gives the bergamot opening a bitter edge.

Is Dolce & Gabbana Velvet Bergamot coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Dolce & Gabbana that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
