Bois De Vetiver, inspired by Karl Lagerfeld Les Parfums Matières Bois de Vétiver (2017)

Pink grapefruit and blood orange give Bois de Vétiver a tart, zesty start, and mint adds a cool, almost menthol edge. Vetiver, the grassy root that smells earthy and a little like damp wood, takes over within minutes. Geranium and rose sit beside it, adding a green, rosy lift rather than obvious florals. A base of patchouli, musk and ambroxan (a clean, mineral amber note) leaves a smooth, dry woody finish.

About the original

Karl Lagerfeld launched Bois de Vétiver in September 2017 as an eau de toilette in Les Parfums Matières, alongside Fleur de Pêcher. Christophe Raynaud composed it, and the launch text called it 'an ode to vetiver and its contrasts'. The collection was later extended with other woods such as Bois d'Ambre, so the name matters: this page is the vetiver.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Karl Lagerfeld stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Anyone who finds classic vetivers too earthy or smoky could start here, because the citrus and mint keep this one airy. Rose and geranium stay in the background, though a wearer wanting a purely woody scent may notice a faint floral tint in the heart.

Vetiver forms the heart, grassy and rooty, with geranium adding a leafy, slightly peppery note and rose a muted floral one.

Patchouli, musk and ambroxan finish it, keeping the drydown clean and dry.

Is this Bois de Vétiver or another Lagerfeld Matières wood?

Bois de Vétiver, the 2017 eau de toilette. Bois de Cyprès, Bois d'Ambre and Bois de Oud are different scents in the same collection.

Is it a smoky vetiver?

It is not built as one. The citrus and mint opening and the musky ambroxan base keep it fresh rather than smoky.
