Encre Noir, inspired by Lalique Encre Noire (2006)

Encre Noire is built almost entirely around vetiver, the root of a tropical grass with an earthy, woody smell. Cypress adds a resinous, green-black opening, and two vetivers, from Haiti and from Réunion (Bourbon), give depth in the heart. Cashmere wood and musk round off the base so the finish is dry but never harsh. The name means black ink, which suits its dark, inky mood.

About the original

Nathalie Lorson created Encre Noire for Lalique in 2006, aiming for a smooth, languid vetiver rather than a bracing one. Its black bottle refers to René Lalique's 'Biches' inkwell of 1913. Critics took to it early, and Victoria Frolova counted it among the best perfumes of 2006. Lalique still sells it, along with a Sport version.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Lalique stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Quiet and serious in mood, it pleases men who like woods and roots more than flowers or fruit. Its earthy darkness can seem austere next to fresh or sweet designer fragrances.

Is it Encre Noir or Encre Noire?

The correct name is Encre Noire, French for black ink. This is our version inspired by the 2006 men's eau de toilette.

Does Encre Noire smell sweet?

No. It is dry vetiver and cypress over a musky wood base, with no vanilla or fruit in its documented notes.
