Explorer, inspired by Montblanc Explorer (2019)

Bergamot and pink pepper give Explorer a brisk, prickly start, with clary sage adding an herbal, slightly musky edge. Within minutes the citrus recedes and vetiver takes over, earthy and rooty, threaded with a supple leather accord. Akigalawood, a material derived from patchouli, brings a peppery, almost smoky woodiness, and Ambrofix, an ambergris-style molecule, gives the base a salty, mineral glow. The overall effect is dry rather than sweet.

About the original

Montblanc introduced Explorer in February 2019 as an Eau de Parfum, created by Jordi Fernandez, Antoine Maisondieu and Olivier Pescheux. It became the first pillar of a new line, later joined by Explorer Ultra Blue, Explorer Platinum and Explorer Extreme. This page refers to the original 2019 Explorer, not those flankers. Montblanc's current note list adds pomarose and sandalwood to the launch pyramid; it is not clear whether that reflects a change in formula or simply updated wording.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Montblanc stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Men who gravitate towards vetiver, leather and patchouli rather than fresh aquatics will feel at home here. It reads polished and composed. Anyone after a sugary or gourmand finish will find the base too austere.

Is this the original Explorer or Explorer Ultra Blue?

The original Montblanc Explorer Eau de Parfum from 2019. Ultra Blue, Platinum and Extreme are separate flankers with their own formulas.

Is Explorer sweet?

Not really. The citrus opening is brief, and the drydown is woody, leathery and earthy, with patchouli rather than vanilla or tonka at the base.

What is akigalawood?

A woody material made from patchouli oil. It smells peppery and dry, with a slightly smoky, agarwood-like tone.
