Portrayal Man, inspired by Amouage Portrayal Man (2019)

Violet leaf, which smells green, slightly cucumber-like and metallic, sets the tone at the start. Vetiver follows, earthy and rooty, and holds the middle. Cade, an oil distilled from juniper wood, gives the base its smoke, close to a campfire or tarred leather. Amouage lists only these three notes, and the scent feels correspondingly focused.

About the original

Amouage launched Portrayal in April 2019 as a pair of separate scents, Portrayal Man and Portrayal Woman. The house presents the men's version as a portrait of 1920s bohemian culture, rendered as woody leather. Its official pyramid names just one note per stage.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Amouage stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Men who like vetiver and smoke without sweet padding are the obvious match. It is dry and lean, and the cade can read as tarry or medicinal to some noses.

Cade is an oil distilled from juniper wood. It smells smoky and tarry, a little like birch tar or a smouldering fire.

Is it a leather scent?

Amouage describes it as woody leather. There is no listed leather note; the leathery impression comes from cade's tarry smoke meeting vetiver.
