Insense Ultramarine, inspired by Givenchy Insensé Ultramarine (1994)

Ultramarine opens with a cool burst of watermelon and black currant, a fruity, watery pairing typical of a 1990s fruity-aquatic. Galbanum, a green resin with a snapped-stem bitterness, stops the fruit from becoming candied. Mint and cardamom give the heart a chilled, spiced lift, with traces of iris and lily of the valley. The base turns dry and slightly smoky through cedar, vetiver and tobacco.

About the original

Givenchy released Insensé Ultramarine in 1994 as a fresh flanker of Insensé, which had arrived a year earlier. Its bottle reversed the colours of the original, blue with yellow trim. In style it is a 1990s fruity-aquatic, with melon and black currant over a green, woody structure.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Givenchy stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Warm weather suits it best, according to wearers of the original. The melon and mint feel distinctly 1990s, which is the appeal for some and a reason to skip it for others; the tobacco and vetiver base keeps it from smelling purely fruity.
