Ebene Fume, inspired by Tom Ford Ébène Fumé (2021)

Ébène Fumé is built around palo santo, a South American wood traditionally burned like incense, whose smoke has a pale, faintly sweet edge. Black pepper sits on top and keeps the start dry. Underneath, cistus resin adds a dense, leathery amber tone, and pine tar brings a campfire darkness. The ebony accord holds everything together as a polished, almost black wood.

About the original

In 2021 Tom Ford Beauty announced Ébène Fumé as the newest addition to its Private Blend range. Launch timing varied by market: Now Smell This reported a US release in October 2021, while the brand's press release gave December 2021. No perfumer has been named in the official material. The brand presents it as a meditative fragrance with sleek leather notes, and it remains part of the Private Blend line.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Tom Ford stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Lovers of incense, smoked woods and dry resins will recognise its territory straight away. It is marketed as unisex and contains nothing gourmand, so anyone hoping for vanilla under the smoke may find it austere. The pine tar and cistus give a tarry, leathery depth that some people find heavy.

Black pepper and palo santo set the tone at the start: peppery, smoky and spare, with the pale incense quality palo santo is known for.

Cistus absolute then thickens the middle. This rock rose resin smells ambery and slightly leathery, and here it gives the smoke more body.

Later, the African ebony accord and pine tar essence take over, leaving dark, polished wood with a tarry, smouldering trace.
