Old Fashioned, inspired by Kilian Paris Old Fashioned (2024)

Old Fashioned sets out to smell like a glass of aged single malt, and the opening does it with wheat absolute, which has a grainy, slightly bitter cereal tone, and davana, a herb whose oil smells of dried fruit and alcohol. Cedarwood then gives the middle a dry, cask-like frame. Immortelle adds a honeyed, faintly hay-like sweetness that keeps the wood from feeling austere. Resins take over at the end, with styrax and tolu balsam leaving a dark, balsamic finish.

About the original

Kilian Paris released Old Fashioned in September 2024 as part of its The Liquors family. Sidonie Lancesseur composed it, and the brand says it drew on the Hennessy family's cognac heritage and on the taste structure of an 18-year-old single malt. Actor Lucien Laviscount was named its ambassador in August 2024. It is a separate scent from the older Kilian liquor fragrances such as Single Malt and Angels' Share.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Kilian Paris stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Its natural audience is the wearer who wants a whisky theme carried by wood and resin. The base is resinous and balsamic, with retail copy also picking out hay, tobacco and honey facets. Someone hoping for a fresh or citrus cocktail scent will find it heavy going.

The top is all grain and spirit: wheat absolute reads dry and bready, while davana lends a boozy, dried-fruit roundness.

In the heart, cedarwood brings a pencil-shaving dryness and immortelle spreads a honey and hay note across it.

Styrax and tolu balsam form the base, resinous and sweetly balsamic, which is where the amber character described by retailers comes through.

How is Old Fashioned different from Kilian Single Malt or Angels' Share?

They are separate Kilian liquor scents. Old Fashioned (2024) is built on wheat, davana, cedar and immortelle with a balsamic resin base. We make all three if you want to compare.

Does it smell of alcohol?

The opening has a boozy tone from davana and the wheat accord, meant to suggest whisky. It turns woody and resinous as it settles.
