By The Fire Place, inspired by Maison Margiela Replica By the Fireplace (2015)

By the Fireplace opens with pink pepper and clove, a spiced start lifted by a little orange blossom. Chestnut follows, roasted and nutty, while guaiac wood and cade oil bring the smoke; cade is a dark oil from juniper wood that smells like burning logs. Peru balsam and cashmeran soften the finish, and vanilla rounds the smoke with sweetness.

About the original

Maison Margiela released By the Fireplace in 2015 as part of Replica, the line in which each scent recreates a memory of a place and time. This one recalls a cosy fireplace in winter, with chestnuts grilling and a crackling wood fire. It is usually credited to perfumer Marie Salamagne. The house still sells it as an eau de toilette and has also issued a limited edition in a gold metallic bottle.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Maison Margiela stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Smoke defines it, though vanilla and chestnut keep it sweet and comforting rather than harsh. Maison Margiela ties it to winter and presents it as unisex. A wearer who dislikes sweetness, or who wants smoke without any gourmand side, would do better with a drier wood scent.
