Rose Of No Man's Land, inspired by Byredo Rose of No Man's Land (2015)

Pink pepper comes first, a peppery tickle more than real heat, laid over fresh Turkish rose petals. The heart deepens the rose with rose absolute, the concentrated extract, which smells fuller than the petals alone, and raspberry blossom adds a touch of red fruit. Underneath, amber and papyrus give a dry, faintly papery base that keeps the rose from turning sugary.

About the original

Byredo released it in August 2015 and dedicated it to the nurses who worked on the front lines of the First World War. The name comes from a song of that war, 'The Rose of No Man's Land'. At launch, part of the proceeds went to Doctors Without Borders. Byredo rates the scent 'Delicate Intensity', says it is 79.7% natural, and still sells it in its main range.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Byredo stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Its pitch sits between a fresh rose and a full romantic one. People who like their florals clear and lightly fruited should get on with it, while a smoky, oud-heavy or jammy rose is a different thing altogether.

The opening pairs pink pepper with fresh rose petals, peppery and a little green.

In the heart the rose fills out, and raspberry blossom lends it a faint red-fruit tint.

The base of amber and papyrus is dry and pale, leaving the rose resting on something close to clean paper and light resin.

Is this the same as Byredo Rose Noir?

No. Rose of No Man's Land is a separate Byredo Eau de Parfum from 2015, built on Turkish rose, pink pepper and raspberry blossom.

Is it a sweet rose?

Not especially. Raspberry blossom adds a little fruit, but the papyrus and amber base keeps it on the dry side.
