Vetiver Moloko, inspired by Ex Nihilo Vetiver Moloko (2014)

Moloko is Russian for milk, and the name explains the idea: vetiver, usually dry, grassy and rooty, wrapped in a milky accord. Bergamot and rose give a clear, fresh start before the milk and cypress arrive; cypress adds a resinous, evergreen note. The base pairs vetiver with amyris, a pale wood with a faintly sweet, balsamic smell, and vanilla. The result is noticeably smoother and sweeter than a traditional vetiver.

About the original

Guillaume Flavigny of Givaudan is credited with Vetiver Moloko, one of Ex Nihilo's early releases; a retailer dates it to 2014, the year after the brand was founded. Ex Nihilo calls it a sophisticated woody fragrance wrapped in a creamy and enveloping veil. It is sold only as an eau de parfum. One retailer specifies Bulgarian rose and Madagascar vanilla.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Ex Nihilo stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Vetiver sceptics are a good test case, since the milk and vanilla take the edge off the root's earthiness. It feels calm and comforting rather than crisp. Fans of bone-dry, smoky vetivers may find it too sweet.
