Diorissimo
39,00 €
Edmond Roudnitska’s 1956 photographic lily of the valley masterpiece. The Dior soliflore icon, with jasmine, ylang and a soft sandalwood musk base. Rebuilt at 40 percent perfume oil.
The 1956 Lily of the Valley Masterpiece
Edmond Roudnitska composed Diorissimo in 1956, and the result became one of the great soliflores of modern perfumery: a lily of the valley fragrance built around an accord rather than a real extract, because lily of the valley produces no essential oil that can be extracted. Roudnitska’s achievement was constructing the flower from synthetic and natural materials so faithfully that wearers genuinely smelled the flower itself. Christian Dior loved lily of the valley, considering it his lucky charm, and Roudnitska’s composition immortalised the connection. Seven decades later, Diorissimo remains in Dior’s heritage line, now in both EDP and EDT formats reformulated by Francois Demachy. Our interpretation honours the classical character.
How It Smells
The opening sparkles with green floral freshness, lily of the valley accord leading immediately and unmistakably from the first spray, with a quiet jasmine adding creamy white floral support and amaryllis contributing a soft fresh floral character. Within fifteen minutes the heart settles into its lily of the valley core, with the composition staying remarkably linear and faithful to the central flower through most of the wearing. A faint ylang ylang adds soft exotic warmth, and boronia contributes a subtle fruity floral nuance. The base settles on sandalwood, civet (in trace amounts), and musk, providing the warmth and longevity that prevent the light floral character from disappearing entirely. The overall impression is photographic: a real lily of the valley, captured in a bottle.
The Notes
Top: lily of the valley, amaryllis, jasmine.
Heart: ylang ylang, boronia.
Base: sandalwood, civet, musk.
How Our Version Compares
Soliflores live or die on the quality of the central flower accord, and lily of the valley is one of the harder ones to keep alive across a wearing because it has no real extract to anchor the composition. At 40 percent perfume oil, made in the European Union, our interpretation provides the depth and longevity that lighter formulations struggle to reach. The photographic lily of the valley character holds clearly from the first spray; the sandalwood musk drydown stays close to skin for hours.
Common Questions
Does it really smell like lily of the valley?
Yes, photographically so. Diorissimo is one of the most successful soliflore constructions in modern perfumery precisely because Roudnitska built the flower so faithfully from synthetic and natural materials.
How does this differ from a real lily of the valley extract?
The flower produces no essential oil. Every “lily of the valley” perfume is therefore a constructed accord rather than a botanical extract. Diorissimo’s achievement is that its accord smells more like the real flower than perfumes built from actual floral extracts often manage.
Is it suitable for weddings?
Beautifully so. Lily of the valley has been a traditional bridal flower for over a century, and Diorissimo has been a favourite bridal fragrance since its 1956 launch. The polished classical character suits ceremonial occasions perfectly.
Best season?
Spring above all, the natural blooming season of lily of the valley. The composition reads at its best in mild weather and gentle light. Year round wear is fine; spring is when the perfume sings.
