Incense & Cedrat, inspired by Jo Malone London Incense & Cedrat Cologne Intense (2015)

Cedrat, a large, thick-skinned citron, opens with a clean, zesty lift before frankincense arrives with a sour, almost metallic tang. Elemi, a resin with a peppery, lemony smell, ties the two together. Over time labdanum and benzoin take the edges off, and the drydown turns sweeter, with a faint vanilla-spice tone.

About the original

Marie Salamagne created it for the brand's black-bottled Cologne Intense series, and it launched in the UK in June 2015. It was built around a frankincense captured with Firmenich's NaturePrint process. In Japan it arrived that September as a limited release at two Tokyo department stores.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jo Malone London stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Resin and incense lovers who prefer a cleaner, citrus-edged frankincense to a smoky, churchy one are the likely audience. Its opening can seem sour and metallic before the benzoin sweetens it, which takes some getting used to.

Cedrat and elemi open it: citrus peel and pepper over the first traces of frankincense.

Incense takes the centre, sour and slightly metallic. Japanese launch press also listed vetiver in the base.

Labdanum and benzoin finish it, resinous and sweet, with a light vanilla-spice tone.

Is Incense & Cedrat still made?

We have not been able to confirm whether Jo Malone London still produces the Cologne Intense.

Is this the Cologne Intense or a regular cologne?

It is inspired by the Cologne Intense, and we found no regular cologne version of Incense & Cedrat. Ours is an eau de parfum.

Is Incense & Cedrat smoky?

Not heavily. The incense is sour and resinous, and the cedrat keeps it fresh.
