Myrrh & Tonka, inspired by Jo Malone London Myrrh & Tonka Cologne Intense (2017)

Lavender gives the first moments an aromatic, slightly herbal lift before the myrrh takes hold. Myrrh is a tree resin with a bittersweet, balsamic smell, a little smoky and medicinal, and here it is the centre of everything. Tonka bean then softens it with an almond, hay-like sweetness, and vanilla deepens the base. It ends up rich and enveloping, far from the brand's lighter colognes.

About the original

Myrrh & Tonka belongs to Jo Malone London's Cologne Intense line, the brand's richer collection, and the brand press release gives January 2017 as its availability date. It is credited to the perfumer Mathilde Bijaoui and built around Omumbiri myrrh from Namibia. The brand calls it sensual and intoxicating. It was included in the 2023 Cologne Intense repackaging and remains on sale, the only Myrrh & Tonka in the range.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jo Malone London stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Resin lovers and anyone drawn to vanilla-amber scents will feel at home with it. Its texture is dense and balsamic. The sweetness of tonka and vanilla, plus the slightly medicinal myrrh, may be too much for buyers who prefer airy, fresh fragrances.

Yes, moderately. Tonka bean, almond and vanilla give a sweet base, balanced by the bittersweet myrrh.

Does it smell like incense?

It is resinous rather than smoky incense. Myrrh brings a balsamic, slightly medicinal note, softened by tonka and vanilla.
