English Oak & Hazelnut, inspired by Jo Malone London English Oak & Hazelnut Cologne (2017)

Fresh hazelnut opens it, the green, unripe kind still in its husk, so the nut reads crisp instead of buttery. Cedar follows almost at once and gives the middle a dry, planed-timber quality. Underneath lies roasted oak, toasted and faintly sweet, a note its perfumer described as addictive. Overall it smells earthy and outdoorsy, more forest floor than pâtisserie.

About the original

Yann Vasnier created it for the English Oak collection, launched in September 2017 alongside English Oak & Redcurrant. Brand copy frames it as a walk among oak trees. It belongs to the regular Cologne line, which Jo Malone London presents as unisex and designed to be worn alone or layered with other scents from the range.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jo Malone London stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Wearers drawn to woods and nuts rather than flowers or fruit will find it an easy fit. It feels dry and fairly light, with sweetness confined to the toasted base. Next to a floral or a sugary gourmand, its earthy character can seem plain.

English Oak & Hazelnut. The Redcurrant version is a separate cologne from the same 2017 collection.

Does it smell like a gourmand?

Not really. The hazelnut is green and fresh, and the only sweetness comes from the roasted oak in the base.
