Gris Charnel Extrait, inspired by BDK Parfums Gris Charnel Extrait (c. 2022)

Cardamom opens with a cool, eucalyptus-tinged spice, and black tea and fig give it a green, slightly milky depth. Iris and cistus, a resin with a leathery, ambery smell, thicken the heart, while vetiver keeps a dry, earthy line running through. The base is fuller than the original Gris Charnel, with patchouli, vanilla and tonka adding sweetness to sandalwood and cedar.

About the original

Mathilde Bijaoui composed both Gris Charnel and this extrait version for BDK Parfums, the Paris house David Benedek founded in 2016. BDK presents the extrait as a richer, woody-amber reading of the original eau de parfum. It adds cistus, patchouli, vanilla and cedar to the familiar fig, tea, cardamom and iris structure. The launch year of around 2022 comes from fragrance references rather than a brand announcement.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not BDK Parfums stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Cooler months and evenings are where wearers place it. It is a dense, resinous scent, and some wearers find it pungent, so anyone after the lighter, airier Gris Charnel may prefer the original eau de parfum.

The Extrait. The original Gris Charnel eau de parfum has a shorter note list without cistus, patchouli, vanilla or cedar.

Is it sweet?

Moderately. Vanilla and tonka sweeten the base, but cardamom, tea and vetiver keep it from turning gourmand.
