English Pear & Freesia, inspired by Jo Malone London English Pear & Freesia Cologne (2010)

The pear here is mellow and ripe, with a juicy facet rather than the sugary note of a pear sweet. Freesia, a cool, slightly peppery white flower, sits close to it in the heart, and Jo Malone's own description adds rose. Patchouli in the base gives the composition a woody depth so the fruit does not float away. It stays light and clean throughout.

About the original

Christine Nagel composed English Pear & Freesia for Jo Malone London, and it launched as a cologne in September 2010. The house presented it as an interpretation of John Keats' ode 'To Autumn', and the brand's description still evokes autumn orchards. Its launch notes listed amber and white musk alongside pear, freesia and patchouli. It remains in the range in standard cologne strength; English Pear & Sweet Pea, added later to the same collection, is a different scent.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Jo Malone London stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Its autumn associations come from Jo Malone itself, yet the scent is light enough to feel fresh rather than heavy. Lovers of rich, sugary fruit perfumes may find it understated.
