Capeline, inspired by Yves Saint Laurent Capeline (2020)

Capeline is a lily scent first, with the flower's spicy, peppery whiteness at the centre. Mandarin and bergamot clear the way at the start, and pink berries add a light rosy pop. Neroli and ylang ylang thicken the heart, while vanilla gives the lily an almost custard-like roundness. Vetiver and musk keep the base dry enough that it never becomes a dessert, and current YSL copy mentions the merest touch of leather.

About the original

YSL launched Capeline in spring 2020 together with Jumpsuit, as additions to Le Vestiaire des Parfums, its couture collection. Juliette Karagueuzoglou created it, and its name comes from the house's wide-brimmed capeline hats; YSL also notes that 'lys', French for lily, is an anagram of the couturier's initials. The scent stayed in the collection when Le Vestiaire was relaunched in square-cut bottles in 2023. Whether that repackaging changed the formula is unclear, though the newer brand copy mentions leather and the 2020 launch copy did not.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Yves Saint Laurent stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Lily lovers get a full, unapologetic version of the flower, rounded by vanilla. YSL markets it as unisex and the dry vetiver base supports that, although the vanilla and heady lily may be too much for anyone who finds white flowers cloying.

YSL presents it as unisex. We list it under women's perfumes, but it is made for anyone who likes lily and vanilla.

Does Capeline smell of leather?

Only faintly, if at all. Current YSL copy mentions the merest touch of leather, while the 2020 launch notes did not list it, and the main impression is lily and vanilla.
