Galop D'Hermes, inspired by Hermès Galop d'Hermès (2016)

Two materials do most of the work: a lush, vivid rose and a supple leather. Saffron sits between them, its dry spice blurring the line between flower and hide, and quince adds a fruity, faintly tart edge at the top. Bois de Jasmin likened the leather to suede rather than raw hide, and that smoothness keeps the rose from turning severe.

About the original

Galop d'Hermès was Christine Nagel's first major creation after she became in-house perfumer at Hermès, launched in August 2016. It is a parfum, the most concentrated form, in a refillable 50 ml bottle shaped like a stirrup and tied with a leather cord, based on an Art Deco design from the 1930s. Nagel said she composed it like a painting with two materials emblematic of Hermès, leather and rose.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Hermès stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Leather fans who normally avoid rose may find this the exception, and rose lovers get a darker, spicier version than usual. As a parfum it is dense and rich, a lot to take in for a wearer used to sheer scents.

Both pair flowers with leather. Kelly Calèche (2007) is lighter and powdery with mimosa, while Galop (2016) is a richer rose-and-saffron leather in parfum strength.

Rose is central, but saffron and leather carry as much weight as the flower, so it reads as a floral leather rather than a pure rose.
