Terre D'Hermes, inspired by Hermès Terre d'Hermès (2006)

Terre d'Hermès begins with orange and the bitter side of grapefruit, pricked by pepper. What sets it apart comes next: a flint note, the dry smell of struck stone, beside pelargonium (the scented geranium plant, green and faintly rosy). From there it moves towards cedar and vetiver, earthy and rooty, while patchouli and benzoin give the base some resinous body. With no musk to cushion it, the scent stays clear and dry.

About the original

Jean-Claude Ellena, then in-house perfumer at Hermès, composed Terre d'Hermès in 2006, and it won the FiFi Award for Men's Fragrance of the Year (Luxe) in 2007. Hermès frames it around man's bond with the earth and the elements, and Ellena chose to leave out musk entirely. He also made the Parfum version in 2009. Later variations include Eau Très Fraîche, Eau Intense Vétiver and Eau Givrée, and since 2016 Christine Nagel has created the later variations.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Hermès stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Restraint is the main draw. It reads as dry and grown-up, which is the point for its admirers and a drawback for men who want warmth or a gourmand edge.

Orange arrives first, quickly joined by grapefruit's bitterness and a peppery prickle.

In the heart, pelargonium adds a green, rosy leafiness while the flint accord gives a mineral, almost dusty dryness.

The base settles on cedar and vetiver, earthy and woody, with patchouli and benzoin adding quiet depth.

Which Terre d'Hermès is this?

Our version takes the original 2006 eau de toilette as its reference. Eau Givrée, Eau Intense Vétiver and Eau Très Fraîche are separate versions, which we also make.

What does the flint note smell like?

Dry and mineral, like struck stone. It gives Terre d'Hermès its earthy character between the citrus and the woods.
