The 1947 Chypre Original

The original Miss Dior launched in 1947, composed by Jean Carles and Paul Vacher as the inaugural Dior feminine to accompany Christian Dior’s “New Look” debut. The brief was a classical green floral chypre: gardenia and galbanum at the opening, jasmine, neroli and rose at the heart, and a base built around patchouli, oakmoss, sandalwood, vetiver and labdanum. The composition defined Dior feminine perfumery for over six decades. In 2011, Dior reformulated the original (renaming it “Miss Dior Originale”) and simultaneously rebranded the 2005 Miss Dior Cherie as simply “Miss Dior.” The 1947 chypre profile has become increasingly hard to find. Our interpretation respects the classical chypre character.

How It Smells

The opening is famously bright and slightly green, galbanum leading with its trademark intensely green resinous character, bergamot adding citrus lift, and gardenia contributing a soft creamy white floral nuance. Within fifteen minutes the heart unfolds: jasmine takes a leading role with its creamy slightly indolic character, neroli adds clean fresh floral citrus support, rose provides deeper floral depth, narcissus contributes a slightly green floral nuance, and clary sage threads through the middle with aromatic polish. The base is where the chypre structure asserts itself. Patchouli grounds the composition with earthy depth, oakmoss provides the mineral green character that defines the chypre family, sandalwood adds creamy wood support, vetiver contributes earthy vegetal warmth, and labdanum wraps the drydown in resinous balsamic depth. The overall impression is classical Parisian elegance, sophisticated and grown up.

The Notes

Top: gardenia, galbanum, clary sage, bergamot.
Heart: jasmine, neroli, rose, narcissus.
Base: patchouli, oakmoss, sandalwood, vetiver, labdanum.

How Our Version Compares

Classical chypres like Miss Dior reward concentration because the patchouli oakmoss labdanum base needs density to develop its characteristic depth. Modern reformulations have softened the oakmoss within IFRA limits, but the chypre signature remains the foundation. Our European Union production at 40 percent perfume oil concentration preserves the original character, with the galbanum gardenia opening sparkling cleanly, the floral heart holding through the wearing, and the patchouli oakmoss drydown lasting well into the next day on clothing.

Common Questions

Is this the original 1947 Miss Dior or the modern Miss Dior?
Our interpretation follows the original chypre profile of the 1947 Carles and Vacher composition. The current “Miss Dior” sold on Dior.com is the 2011 Demachy reformulation of Miss Dior Cherie, which is a completely different perfume.

Is the original chypre still in production?
Effectively no. Dior renamed the original to “Miss Dior Originale” in 2011 and has since pruned it from main retail channels. Original bottles now circulate primarily through specialist retailers and resale platforms, often with mixed authenticity.

Will it feel dated or vintage?
Classical rather than dated. If you appreciate the great French chypre tradition (Mitsouko, Femme by Rochas, Cabochard), Miss Dior fits naturally. If you only enjoy modern light compositions, the green floral chypre character may read assertive.

Best season?
Spring and autumn especially, when the green floral chypre character reads at its best. The galbanum gardenia opening performs particularly well in mild cool weather. Year round wear is possible; the deep base suits cooler temperatures.

How does it project?
Strong in the first three hours, then settling into a closer warm skin scent. The chypre structure carries beautifully across a room in the opening phase, while the patchouli oakmoss drydown rewards conversational distance and lasts long on clothing.
