Rose De Chine

Rose De Chine, inspired by Tom Ford Rose de Chine (2022)

Chinese peony opens the scent, fresh and petal-like, and holds the stage for a while before the rose comes through. Tom Ford used a rose-on-rose distillation process across the collection, and the rose here has a full, rounded body. Underneath, myrrh and labdanum add a balsamic, faintly smoky resin. Labdanum, also called cistus or rockrose, is a sticky shrub resin with an amber-like smell.

About the original

Tom Ford launched the Private Rose Garden collection in early 2022, first in travel retail, with three roses each tied to a destination: Rose d'Amalfi, Rose de Russie and this one, which evokes China. We have found no published perfumer credit. Rose d'Amalfi is still sold, but Rose de Chine and Rose de Russie no longer appear in Tom Ford's range, and owners have reported Rose de Chine as discontinued.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Tom Ford stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Rose lovers who want resin under the petals rather than a jammy or dewy rose may enjoy it. Opinions on the original were mixed, and the peony can dominate the first stage, so the rose takes a little patience.

Is Tom Ford Rose de Chine discontinued?

The brand's own British and American sites no longer show it, and owners and at least one niche retailer report it as discontinued, though some US discounters still have stock. Rose d'Amalfi from the same collection is still sold.

Is Rose de Chine for men or women?

Private Blend scents are generally treated as unisex, and fragrance references list Rose de Chine for women and men. Some US retailers file it under women.

Does it smell more of peony or rose?

Peony dominates early, then the rose comes through over myrrh and labdanum.

Is Tom Ford Rose De Chine coming back?

So far, we have found no announcement from Tom Ford that it will return. Our version is an eau de parfum in 50 ml or 100 ml.
