Gaiac 10

Gaiac 10, inspired by Le Labo Gaiac 10 (2008)

Guaiac wood is a South American timber whose oil smells gently smoky and greenish, less dry than cedar. In Gaiac 10 it is surrounded by musk, so the wood feels rounded and clean rather than rugged. Cedar adds a pencil-like dryness, and olibanum, another name for frankincense, threads a cool, resinous line through the whole thing. The result is subtle and tense at once, with little sweetness at any stage.

About the original

Le Labo announced Gaiac 10 in September 2008 as its City Exclusive for Tokyo, alongside Poivre 23, and launch coverage credits it to Annick Menardo. That coverage described a formula of guaiac wood with four different musks. It was first sold only at the Tokyo boutique; Le Labo now sells it in Tokyo and online worldwide every August to September. The 2008 launch posts called it a perfume extract, whereas the brand's current page describes an eau de parfum.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Le Labo stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Minimalists who prefer texture to drama tend to suit this kind of scent. Le Labo itself calls it a subtle, profound woody musk. A clear top note or a sweet base is absent here, which can make it seem too understated and dry.

From the start it is wood and musk together: guaiac, faintly smoky and green, softened by layers of clean musk.

Cedar sharpens the middle slightly, and olibanum adds a cool, peppery incense note.

The drydown stays close to the same idea, a musky guaiac and cedar blend with resin underneath.

Le Labo sells it in Tokyo and online worldwide each year from August to September, with its other City Exclusives.

What does guaiac wood smell like?

A soft, slightly smoky wood with a greenish edge. It is gentler and less dusty than cedar.

Is Gaiac 10 smoky?

Only a little. The guaiac and olibanum bring a faint smoke and incense tone, but musk keeps it smooth.
