Petit Matin, inspired by Maison Francis Kurkdjian Petit Matin (2016)

Litsea cubeba sets the tone: it is a small pepper-like berry whose oil smells of lemongrass and lemon peel, and here it sits beside lemon itself for a tart, zesty start. Lavandin, a hardier cousin of lavender with a more camphorous edge, follows with orange blossom and softens the citrus. The heart is built on a hawthorn accord, a delicate spring-blossom floral. Musk and Ambroxan form an airy base, and ethyl maltol, a molecule with a candyfloss sweetness, rounds off the edges.

About the original

Francis Kurkdjian launched Petit Matin in 2016 together with Grand Soir, as a pair inspired by Paris at dawn and at night. Petit Matin is the daytime half, presented by the house as an early-morning walk through the city, while Grand Soir is an amber for the evening. Both were sold at first only in the brand's Paris boutiques and at La Belle Parfumerie at Printemps, reaching other retailers from September that year. The original is an eau de parfum, and we found no other concentration.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Maison Francis Kurkdjian stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Someone who likes a fresh citrus in the morning but wants a musky finish under it will see the appeal. The house positions it as a daytime scent for spring and summer. Sweetness in the base is light, and lavandin gives the start an aromatic, herbal side.

Zest comes first: litsea cubeba and lemon, almost fizzy, with lavandin adding an herbal coolness.

Orange blossom and the hawthorn accord take over in the heart, floral but airy rather than heady.

The drydown is clean musk and Ambroxan, with ethyl maltol leaving a faint caramelised sweetness.

What is the difference between Petit Matin and Grand Soir?

They were launched together in 2016. Petit Matin is the citrus and musk daytime half; Grand Soir is a rich amber intended for evening, and we make a version inspired by it too.

Is Petit Matin sweet?

Only slightly. Citrus and lavandin lead, and the sweetness arrives later from ethyl maltol in the musky base.
