Sartorial, inspired by Penhaligon's Sartorial (2010)

Sartorial begins with aldehydes, aroma materials with a clean, starchy fizz, joined by a cool metallic note and violet leaf. Cardamom and ginger add spice within minutes, with a crack of black pepper. Lavender then comes forward beside beeswax, which gives a waxy, honeyed texture, and leather sits underneath. The finish is gentler, as tonka and vanilla sweeten oakmoss and aged woods.

About the original

Bertrand Duchaufour composed Sartorial, which Penhaligon's launched in September 2010. The idea came from the workroom of Norton & Sons, the tailor at 16 Savile Row, and the scent sets out to evoke steam irons, beeswax and cloth. Penhaligon's describes it as a classic, dapper gentleman's fragrance, and it is still sold as an eau de toilette.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Penhaligon's stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Men who like traditional lavender fragrances but want something less predictable tend to be its audience. The aldehydic, metallic opening is unusual and can come across as cold at first, since the sweeter tonka and vanilla only take over later.

The opening pairs aldehydes and an ozonic effect with violet leaf and neroli, giving a cool, pressed-linen impression. Cardamom and ginger add spice.

In the heart, lavender meets beeswax and leather, with cyclamen and linden blossom adding a light floral note.

The drydown is woody and mossy, oakmoss and cedarwood softened by tonka bean and a honeyed effect. Myrrh and patchouli add depth underneath.

Is Sartorial an eau de toilette or an eau de parfum?

Penhaligon's sells Sartorial as an eau de toilette, and that 2010 eau de toilette is the reference. Ours, by contrast, is made as an eau de parfum.

Does Sartorial smell metallic?

At the start, yes. Aldehydes and a metallic effect give it a cool, steamy edge before lavender and leather settle in.

Is Sartorial sweet?

Only in the drydown, where tonka bean and vanilla round out the woods and oakmoss.
