X For Men

X For Men, inspired by Clive Christian X Masculine (2001)

Cardamom opens X with a green, aromatic spice; ginger and pink pepper add bite, and bergamot keeps it fresh. Orris, the powdery root of the iris, and violet bring a cool, slightly cosmetic tone to the heart, while cinnamon and jasmine round it out. Oakmoss and tree moss give the base an earthy, forest-floor depth, and vetiver adds dryness. Vanilla tempers the edges without making it sweet.

About the original

Clive Christian launched X for Men alongside X for Women; sources give 2001 or 2002. It now appears as X Masculine in the brand's Original Collection, and Clive Christian says the pair was inspired by Marc Antony and Cleopatra. The current official notes differ from older published lists, which gave bay leaf, cedar, tonka and sandalwood, and the brand has not explained the change. A limited X Neroli edition followed in 2020.

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Clive Christian stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Men who like spice with a touch of powder will find the violet-orris heart the defining feature. Its mossy base gives a classic, slightly old-fashioned depth. Buyers looking for a fresh citrus or a sweet amber may find it too dry and cosmetic.

This is X for Men. X Neroli was a separate 2020 limited edition built on neroli and tuberose, which we also make.
