Angel, inspired by Mugler Angel (1992)

Angel is built on a collision. Spun-sugar notes of cotton candy and praline sit directly on patchouli, a leaf oil that smells earthy, damp and faintly camphorous, and neither side gives way. Calabrian bergamot offers a brief citrus lift at the start before the sugar takes over. Vanilla rounds the base, but the patchouli keeps the drydown from turning into plain dessert.

About the original

Thierry Mugler released Angel in 1992, and it is widely cited as the first modern gourmand fragrance. The composition is usually credited to Olivier Cresp, with some sources also naming Yves de Chiris. It came in a star-shaped bottle and has been offered as a refill since the 1990s. Flankers such as Angel Elixir, Angel Nova and Angel Fantasm followed, along with A*Men, the men's counterpart.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Mugler stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

Mugler sells Angel as a women's fragrance, and it wears rich rather than airy. The candyfloss is unapologetic, with nothing fresh to offset it beyond the opening bergamot. Its pairing of sugar with patchouli divides opinion.

Calabrian bergamot opens it, but only briefly; within minutes the caramelised cotton candy is in front.

Praline joins in the heart, nutty and toasted, while patchouli rises underneath with an earthy, almost cocoa-dark tone. Older descriptions of Angel also mention red berries and honey.

The drydown is vanilla and patchouli, still sugary but darker and drier than the start.

Is Angel for women or unisex?

Mugler markets Angel as a women's fragrance. A*Men is the separate men's counterpart, which we also make.

Which Angel is this based on?

The original Angel Eau de Parfum from 1992, not one of the later flankers such as Angel Nova or Angel Elixir.

Does it smell of chocolate?

Chocolate is not in Mugler's current notes, though older descriptions mention it. Next to the praline, the patchouli can give a dark, cocoa-like impression.
