English Rose, inspired by Yardley London English Rose

Rather than a dark or jammy rose, this one is fresh and petal-like, with citrus giving the opening some sparkle. Rose bud, magnolia and violet keep the heart gentle, and cassis (blackcurrant) adds a tart, slightly green fruitiness. Woody touches and a patchouli-musk base hold it together without much weight. What comes across is a clean, straightforward rose.

About the original

Yardley, the English fragrance house founded in 1770, has sold rose scents for decades, and the current English Rose eau de toilette appears to be a modern reworking of an older name. Sources disagree on its launch, giving either 1997 or 2015, and the earlier listing describes an entirely different formula. Yardley describes the current version as 94% naturally derived and vegan. It belongs to the brand's Modern Classic Florals range.

Who it suits

Yardley suggests spraying it in the morning and refreshing it during the day, which says a lot about its weight: it is light and easygoing. Rose lovers after depth, oud or heavy powder will find it too gentle. It sits most naturally in casual daytime wear.

Only slightly. Violet adds a little powder, but citrus and cassis keep the rose fresh.
