Naomi, inspired by Naomi Campbell (1999)

Anise leads with a liquorice-like bite, while a pinch of chilli pepper stops the peach and coconut from turning syrupy. Heliotrope, a flower that smells faintly of almond and powder, sits at the centre with jasmine, rose and tuberose. The sugar builds as it settles: caramel, vanilla and benzoin (a balsamic resin with a vanilla-like tone) carry the base, and opoponax adds a resinous depth.

About the original

Naomi Campbell released her first fragrance in 1999, launched in association with Cosmopolitan Cosmetics and Wella. It is usually credited to the perfumer Ursula Wandel. Naomagic followed in 2001 and Exult in 2002, so the eponymous scent is easily mixed up with her later releases. Published note lists for the 1999 fragrance differ between sources, and the notes on this page follow the most detailed pyramid.

Who it suits

Lovers of vanilla-heavy florals and amber scents will feel at home with it. Caramel and coconut make it unmistakably sugary, so it is a poor match for anyone after something green or citrus-fresh.

The opening is busy and spiced: anise and chilli pepper over peach, coconut, tangerine and bergamot, with orange blossom and magnolia already hinting at the flowers to come.

In the heart, heliotrope gives an almond-powder note that ties together jasmine, lily of the valley, rose and tuberose.

The base is the sweetest part, with caramel and vanilla over benzoin, opoponax, amber and musk.

Her 1999 debut eau de toilette, sometimes listed simply as Naomi. It is not Naomagic (2001) or one of the Cat Deluxe scents.

Is it very sweet?

Yes. Caramel, vanilla and coconut sit at its core, and the anise and pepper only partly offset them.
