Peony

Peony, inspired by L'Occitane en Provence Pivoine Flora (2011)

Peony smells partly of rose and partly of fresh water and green stems, and that pairing drives this scent. Grapefruit and bergamot lift the start with a zingy, slightly bitter citrus, while green notes keep it crisp. Magnolia and violet fill out the middle without adding weight. It finishes clean, on white musk with cedar and a little vanilla.

About the original

L'Occitane launched Pivoine Flora in spring 2011 as part of its Peony range, in eau de toilette and eau de parfum versions with matching bath and body products. Launch press credits the perfumer Dorothée Piot. Bois de Jasmin described it at the time as a sheer rose-peony accented with citrus, and the brand calls it a just-picked bouquet of peonies. Today the eau de toilette is sold in new packaging, and the brand's current note list (peony extract, white musk, sandalwood) differs slightly from the 2011 one.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not L'Occitane en Provence stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

A wearer who likes florals that feel airy and green will get on with it best. The brand links it to spring, and it stays light rather than rich. Fans of vanilla-heavy or strongly powdery florals may find it slight.

Peony takes over in the heart, rosy and watery, while magnolia brings a lemony floral tone and violet a faint powderiness.

Which L'Occitane peony scent is this?

Pivoine Flora, the eau de toilette L'Occitane launched in 2011 and sells in English as Peony. It differs from the later Pivoine Délicate (2012) and from seasonal Pivoine editions.

Is L'Occitane Peony sweet?

Only mildly. Vanilla appears in the base, but citrus, green notes and peony lead, so it reads fresh more than sugary.
