Wonderwood, inspired by Comme des Garçons Wonderwood (2010)

Wonderwood begins with Madagascar pepper and bergamot, a crisp, spicy start that gives way quickly to wood. The brand calls it 'a positive overdose of woods', and natural cedar and sandalwood sit alongside modern woody materials such as cashmeran (musky and slightly velvety) and javanol (a synthetic with a sandalwood character). Guaiac wood adds a smoky note, and Somalian incense with a touch of oud keeps the base dark and dry. Nutmeg and caraway seed add spice along the way.

About the original

Wonderwood arrived in 2010 as an eau de toilette, and Comme des Garçons describes it as 'wood gone mad'. The perfumer is not settled in the sources available, so we do not name one. An eau de parfum version was added later and is sold alongside the original. It is a different scent from the brand's Wonderoud.

Our version

Ours is an independent eau de parfum made to evoke the same character. It is not Comme des Garçons stock, not an official relaunch and not the original formula.

Who it suits

A wood lover's scent through and through, with spice and incense but nothing sweet or floral. Its blend of natural and synthetic woods can feel austere to people used to ambery woody scents.

The heart stacks cedarwood and guaiac wood over sandalwood, while cashmeran and javanol fill the gaps and nutmeg adds spice.

Vetiver and Somalian incense close it, with a little oud for depth.

Is this based on the eau de toilette or the eau de parfum?

Our version takes the original 2010 Wonderwood eau de toilette as its reference. Comme des Garçons later added an eau de parfum, which is still sold alongside it.

Is Wonderwood the same as Wonderoud?

No. Wonderoud is a separate Comme des Garçons fragrance; this page is about Wonderwood (2010).

Does it contain oud?

Oud is one of thirteen listed notes, alongside cedar, sandalwood, guaiac and vetiver, so it is one wood among many rather than the lead.
